WhatsApp ruins your photos: how to send full-quality photos to clients
By Bharat · 18 Oct 2026 · 2 min read
Photographers spend hours editing a photo, send it on WhatsApp, and the client sees a soft, blotchy version on their phone. That is not the edit. WhatsApp compresses photos to save data, and most clients never know there is another way.
The short answer
- For a few photos, send them as a Document. WhatsApp sends the original file without compressing it.
- The HD option looks sharper than the default but is still compressed.
- For more than a handful of photos, send a gallery link instead of the files.
Why WhatsApp reduces quality
When you send a photo normally, WhatsApp shrinks its resolution and file size so it sends quickly on mobile data. A 20 MB edited file can arrive as a small fraction of that. Fine detail in jewellery, lehenga embroidery and skin tones is the first thing to go.
Option 1: the HD button
When you attach a photo, WhatsApp shows an HD option. It sends a larger, sharper version than the default.
- Good for: quick previews where speed matters.
- Limit: it is still compressed, so it is not the file you edited.
Option 2: send as a Document
Instead of attaching from the gallery, attach the photo as a Document. WhatsApp then sends the original file unchanged, up to 2 GB per file.
- Good for: a few final photos, such as a favourite portrait the couple wants to print.
- Limits: the client sees a file icon instead of a preview, it uses more of their data, and sending hundreds of documents is not practical.
Option 3: send a link
For a full set, send one link to a gallery or folder. The client views photos at full quality and downloads what they need.
- Good for: previews of a whole function, the complete wedding, or sharing with the family.
- Limit: a plain folder link is hard to use on a phone with thousands of photos. A gallery made for clients is easier. Compare the options in pen drive, Google Drive or online gallery.
Which to use when
| Situation | Best way |
|---|---|
| Two or three teaser photos on the wedding night | HD button |
| A few final photos for printing | Send as Document |
| A full function or the whole wedding | Gallery link |
| Every guest wants their own photos | Face search gallery link |
